Spring Rains

It's not even officially spring yet and the rain continues.  I'm not sure I'm looking forward to our "rainy" season because we have already had so much rain.  It seems our back yard has remained flooded for most of the past few months.  It finally just gets to drying up a little and bam, more rain!  The ducks are LOVING it, me not so much.

I'm not even sure what this will all mean for planting the garden yet, but I'm glad for the raised beds.  I know it has kept me from spraying the fruit trees so I am sad if that means no fruit again.  I must get out this week and try to get some spraying done.  I also have not put down the stuff to help control the weeds in the flower gardens.  So much to do and the weather keeps delaying what must get done.  There is more rain coming Saturday, a day that I desperately need to get some outdoor work done.

Hopefully, it will all work out.  Hopefully, the garden will get planted on time.  Hopefully, this rain will subside enough to get the necessary work done.  I hope you are staying dry where ever you are.  Rain is good.  Too much is not.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

We have had so much rain over the past month.  I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but we have had just TOO MUCH rain.  It has rained, flooded, froze, thawed, rained more, froze more, and on and on.  It has been raining almost nonstop again since yesterday and isn't supposed to stop till about noon tomorrow!  Our ground is so saturated and our backyard is badly flooded in several spots.

The walk to the chicken yard multiple times a day has become treacherous due to the ice and/or mud depending on the temperatures. When the weather has been at and below freezing temperatures I have had to make extra trips to the coop to collect the eggs before they freeze.  So far we have only had one frozen egg I had to throw away.  Not bad when we are currently getting 12-15 eggs per day.

Enough whining.  There have been some beautiful days, but I am so ready for spring to be here!  Ready to get the garden started.  Ready for warmer, sunnier days.  May your day be blessed.

So I didn't have a chance to get on and update again.  It has been another crazy week last week. I am grateful that the rain has stopped again.  But I see that we might have more coming at the end of the week.  The garden survived ok.  Some plants that don't like excessive water seem to be struggling a little, but I think everything except maybe my buterfuly bushes will pull through.

My butterfly bushes have taken a double whammy.  Our winter weather warmed up too early.  They started to sprout new shoots, then a cold snap came.  I thought I had lost them, but they seemed to be slow in coming back.  Then the rain.  They are not happy!  Time will tell if they will pull through.

The chickens didn't seem too disgruntled over the excessive rain but it has made the run a muddy mess.  The last couple days have allowed it to dry up quite a bit, but with more rain coming we'll see if I can get more mulch and shavings down to get the mud gone.
